VFACTS September 2024: Australian New-Car Sales Take a Dip

23/10/2024 by Lania Mason in Industry news

New-car sales have slumped for the second month in a row, despite a booming demand for hybrids, which saw again Toyota RAV4 top the charts as best-selling model.

Recent data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) confirmed that 97,020 vehicles were purchased, a 12.4% decrease from the same month last year.

The reported figure does not include sales figures from Tesla and Polestar, who have stopped reporting their numbers to FCAI, but still share their monthly data with the Electric Vehicle Council.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber stated that although the sales results up to the end of September were strong, the decline in sales compared to the same month last year reflects the current challenging economic conditions.

“During the early part of the year we witnessed record numbers,” he said. “However, the September result shows that the state of the economy is impacting purchasing intentions.”

Electric Vehicles, Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids

Combining both FCAI data and reported figures from Tesla and Polestar to the Electric Vehicle Council, Australian new car buyers purchased 6,422 Electric Vehicles (EV), down 27.2% from the previous year.

In contrast, Hybrid sales were up 34.4%, with 13,579, while Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) were up 89.9% from September 2023, with 2,470 sales.
