New-car sales have slowed despite a booming demand for hybrids, which led the Toyota RAV4 to another monthly win.
Recent data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) confirmed that 98,323 vehicles were purchased, a 10.6% decrease from the same month last year.
The reported figure does not include sales figures from Tesla and Polestar, who have stopped reporting their numbers to FCAI, but still share their monthly data with the Electric Vehicle Council.
Despite the decrease, FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Webster, said that this was still a good result.
“This is a positive result in historic terms with this being the second highest August ever in Australia,” he said. “The outlier in the data is the 2023 number which broke the previous best August result (2017) by 13.8 per cent. Year to date the market is up by 5.3 per cent.”
“Once again, the new car market is showing signs of resilience as cost-of-living pressures and interest rates continue to impact the economy.”
Electric Vehicles, Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids
Combining both FCAI data and reported figures from Tesla and Polestar to the Electric Vehicle Council, Australian new car buyers purchased 5,892 Electric Vehicles (EV), down 18.5% from the previous year.
In contrast, Hybrid sales were up 44.9%, with 16,664, while Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) were up 119.8% from August 2023, with 2,644 sales.
