VFACTS July 2024: New Vehicle Sales Bounce Back with Record-Breaking July

15/08/2024 by Lania Mason in Industry news

After a dip in new car sales in June, the Australian vehicle market has bounced back to set a new July record.

Recent data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) confirmed that 99,486 vehicles were purchased, a 2.7% increase from the same month last year.

The reported figure does not include sales figures from Tesla and Polestar, who have stopped reporting their numbers to FCAI, but still share their monthly data with the Electric Vehicle Council.

“This is a remarkable achievement in an economy featuring widespread cost of living pressures. It was also interesting to note that while sales in the Business and Government segments were up 13.7 per cent and 37.5 per cent respectively, Private sales were down 4.2 per cent.” said FCAI Chief Executive Tony Webster.

“While the first seven months of 2024 have exceeded expectations, the industry remains cautious about the future pending the implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard coupled with the economic conditions.”

Electric Vehicles, Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids

Combining both FCAI data and reported figures from Tesla and Polestar to the Electric Vehicle Council, Australian new car buyers purchased 6,743 Electric Vehicles (EV), down 29.6% from the previous month.

In contrast, Hybrid sales were up 17.6%, with 18,039, while Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) were up 13.3% from June 2024, with 2,209 sales.

The Toyota Rav4 secured the top-selling vehicle for the month above Ford’s Ranger, only the fifth time the SUV has done so in its history.

Tony Weber, the FCAI’s Chief Executive, credited the RAV4’s success to a recent shift in consumer preference toward hybrids and away from fully electric vehicles.

Toyota's success continued, as it claimed third (Toyota HiLux), fourth (Toyota Corolla), and fifth (Toyota LandCruiser) positions.

With Tesla no longer reporting sales figures to FCAI, the MG ZS found itself in the top 10 with 1,815 vehicle sales.
