Australia’s automotive industry continues to grow setting a record in April 2024, achieving the highest-ever year-to-date new vehicle sales result.
The latest figures published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show a total of 92,202 vehicles purchased, up 18.3% on the same month last year.
“April’s result highlights strong consumer confidence in purchasing new vehicles, surpassing our expectations and is a testament to consumer choice and the industry’s resilience in a challenging economic landscape” said FCAI Chief Executive Tony Webster.
Electric Vehicles, Hybrids and Plug-In Hybrids
Hybrid vehicle sales surged by 194.5%, reaching 16,466 units, while Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) sales experienced a notable increase of 138.5%, totalling 1,300 units compared to the same period last year.
In contrast, Electric Vehicle (EV) sales saw a decline of 5.1% compared to April 2023, with 6,194 units sold. This downturn was largely influenced by a significant year-over-year drop of 43.5% for Tesla, a leading EV manufacturer.
Consequently, EVs' market share decreased to 6.4%, down from 7.9% in April 2023.
