Fleetcare Crash Management makes crashes less stressful

20/12/2018 by Mark Schneider in Safety

Today’s cars come packed with a host of safety features designed to make accidents less likely. Technology like Auto Emergency Braking (AEB), Traction Control, Intelligent Speed Assist and improved handling and stability are saving lives on our roads. Yet despite that crashes still happen, all the technology in the world can’t totally negate carelessness, inattention, human stupidity and occasionally just sheer bad luck. It can happen to anyone, even the safest driver on the road.

People who drive as part of their job need to take particular care on the roads. As we’ve pointed out before, statistics show they’re far more likely to be involved in a crash than other road users. So what do you do if it happens to you?

The most obvious first step is to stop immediately, take a deep breath and assess the situation. Before jumping straight out of the car check to see whether it’s safe to do so. Car crashes can be chaotic and you don’t want to get out of the car and get hit by another vehicle. Once you’re sure it’s safe check to see if anyone is injured and call an ambulance if that’s the case. Apply first aid if it’s required.

But if the crash is not that serious then move your car off the road so it’s not blocking traffic. Before you do that take a photo of the scene with your phone for insurance purposes if it’s safe to do so. If it can’t be moved then put your hazard warning lights on and get out of the way.

Next get the details of the other driver involved – their name, address, contact details and insurance details and note down the number plate of their vehicle. If there’s extensive property damage or the other driver is uncooperative then call the police.
