With the news so often covering negative stories, we thought it was time to buck the trend and focus on happier topics. Now that the giving and cheerful season of the holidays is upon us, we have compiled a list of stories in 2013 that made us smile - we hope they do the same for you!

  • The birth of the royal baby: Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to the future King of England on July 22. Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge is third in line to the throne, after his grandfather Prince Charles and father Prince William. The highly anticipated birth was celebrated worldwide.
  • 3 US women found after missing for a decade: Giving hope too many that abducted loved ones may one day come home, 3 women in Cleveland were found after being held captive for ten years.
  • Batkid saves the day in San Francisco: Five year old leukaemia survivor Miles Scott was given the ultimate superhero adventure by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In November he was transformed into ‘Batkid’, given his own batmobile to ride in, villains to defeat and a damsel in distress to save. The entire city of San Fransisco got involved, with the media, sports teams, mayor, public and even US President Obama lending their support for a truly magical day. Read more here.
  • Man runs marathons in all 50 US states, all while battling cancer: In an accomplishment that would be a massive achievement for anyone, Don Wright has completed a marathon in each US state while battling multiple myeloma. Completing his final marathon in Hawaii in January, his spirit and never give up attitude is a testament to us all. Read more about it.
