To Track or not to Track

I was with a prospective new client the other day and they were telling me how all of their vehicles have GPS tracking. Recalling some earlier discussions around concerns for driver privacy I asked how this was addressed in the organisation. They told me privacy concerns had been a minor issue before the accident, but now GPS tracking is fully supported. The accident?

They told me that one of their drivers had a head-on collision on the crest of a hill in a remote location, one driver dead the other critical. When the driver failed to check in they pulled up Google Maps and through the GPS tracking saw that the vehicle was not moving and its exact location, after failing to contact the driver they feared the worst and dispatched a helicopter.

Is privacy really an issue when we drive a company vehicle or is it just an emotional reaction to change?
