Tesla Model S – The game changer

Both a motor and a technology company, Tesla is set to make a big impression in the Australian automotive industry. Co-founded by Elon Musk, Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel and Ian Wright, Tesla is here to change the way Australians think of electric cars and push forward the future dynamics of the automotive industry.

A bit about Tesla

Tesla Motors entered into the electric automotive industry in 2006. Its first vehicle – a Roadster, was an all-electric modification to the Lotus Elise sports car released in the US in 2008. A few of these vehicles made it into the Australian market however it never really took off down under.

Welcome to the future 2014! Tesla has launched into the Australian market with a bang delivering a number of the Signature edition Model S sedans. The Tesla S has been welcomed by Australian consumers with people lining up to get their hands on this cutting edge vehicle.

The Model S is the sole focus for Tesla at the moment in Australia and people in the automotive industry are excited to see how this newcomer in the Australian market will perform.

The Car

The Model S vehicle from Tesla delivers breathtaking performance. Unlike a normal petrol engine that contains hundreds of moving parts, Tesla electric motors only has one moving piece. This allows the Tesla Model S to accelerate immediately reaching speeds of 100 km per hour in as little as 4.6 seconds.

The Model S is built around the driver and delivers exquisite materials including a 17 inch touch screen and leather trims. With its high end luxury feel, Tesla has also kept safety in mind with the vehicle given the highest safety rating in America in all categories of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Highlights:

  • Price $100,000 - $220,000 depending on model
  • Range 260km – 500km
  • Performance  - 0-100km in 5.6 seconds (standard) and 4.6 seconds (performance) although Tesla claims .8 seconds for its latest model

  • On-board charger
  • 19-inch alloy wheels

  • 17.0 inch touchscreen for all media, communication, cabin and vehicle controls
  • 500 song memory storage

A vehicle which can upgrade itself much like your smartphone or computer, will constantly out do itself. The Tesla S is a game changer in the electric car industry.  We can see this as only the beginning for Tesla motors and look forward to seeing what other futuristic designs they come up with.
