Ford Falcon XR8 vs Santa’s sleigh

Christmas is looming and the excitement is building around the world with children eagerly anticipating Santa’s arrival with presents for all.

He’s been doing the job for centuries now, using the same old faithful sleigh with Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen putting in the hard yards with the reindeer power up front, with occasional help from young Rudolph.

Perhaps after all those countless Christmas deliveries it’s time for Santa to upgrade the old sleigh with something a little more modern? It’s obviously been on Santa’s mind because he contacted us here at Fleetcare recently to see if we could come up with a set of wheels better suited to carrying him and his payload into the 21st Century. Specifically, he was wondering whether Ford’s top of the range Falcon XR8 might fit the bill?

Well we’re always keen to help, so we decided to do a quick comparison between the old sleigh with its reindeer power, and Ford’s latest muscle car, the 2015 Falcon XR8. Here’s what we found:

Space and towing capacity

The Falcon sedan boasts 504 litres of boot capacity – that’s pretty generous and will probably suit the average family quite well. However we don’t think it will be up to Santa’s needs and even the Falcon wagon, with its 1254 litres of space, would struggle.

Santa’s a bit vague on the exact details of his cargo and delivery schedule but the best available evidence suggests that his payload is at least 321,300 tons (that’s 291,478 metric tonnes if you want to be pedantic). I think the Falcon’s going to have its work cut out even with the optional 1600kg rated Tow Pack.

Power

With 335kW from its 5.0 litre supercharged V8 the Falcon XR8 will go from 0-100 in about 5.5 seconds with a top speed somewhere north of 230km/h.

Unfortunately that’s not going to cut it compared to those reindeers!

With something like 92 million homes to visit over 31 hours at a rate of 822.6 visits/seconds, Donner and Blitzen and the boys drag 291,478 tonnes around at just over 1000 kilometres per second. (Yes, yes, we know, the load keeps getting lighter, but even so…).

By our back-of-an-envelope calculation that means the sleigh can accelerate from 0-1,000 kilometres/second in 1/822 of a second. That doesn’t just put the Falcon XR8 in the shade, it pretty well leaves Han Solo’s Millenium Falcon floundering in its wake too!

Fuel Consumption

With a supercharged 5.0litre V8 under the bonnet the Falcon is thirsty, taking in 13.7litres/100 kilometres. That’s the official figures, so Santa would be getting a lot less than that with the pedal to the metal on Christmas eve.

In marked contrast to the Falcon’s fuel diet, reindeers eat lichen, grass, forbs, sedges and herbs, and occasionally even small rodents and mushrooms. Santa tells us that he makes sure all eight reindeer get a decent feed leading up to the big day and that he carries a big bag of carrots for a mid-flight snack which helps them see in the dark.

So that’s a very optimistic 13.7 litres/100 kilometres for the Falcon compared to eight gutfuls of lichen/121.5 million km for the sleigh.

Not looking all that good for the Falcon, is it?

Santa was very impressed with the Falcon’s interior, with its dual zone climate control and its SYNC2 infotainment system with its voice operated commands. He also found the comfortable, wide leather seats were just perfect for his not inconsiderable girth.

Finally then, we’ve found a clear winner in the Falcon over Santa’s trusty old sleigh, which really doesn’t have an interior at all.

In fact Santa was so taken with the Falcon’s infotainment system that he was keen to have one installed in the sleigh. Sadly we had to disappoint him by politely pointing out that travelling, as he was, at 3000 times the speed of sound, the stereo system might not work the way he would like.

Verdict

Santa decided to stick with his sleigh in the end, but did tell us that he may consider a novated lease in the future. Our novated sales team eagerly await his call.
