FAQs

Can I choose the insurance company? I might be able to get a better deal somewhere else.
Fleetcares insurance product is built into the Novated lease at a competitive rate and is billed monthly. You may be able to source your insurance from your own insurer, subject to Fleetcare’s approval, however your first salary deduction will be increased to match your insurance premium and you will have to pay for it yourself and seek reimbursement.

Can I set my residual lower than recommended?
You may be able to, but the Tax Office prescribes minimum and maximum amounts that the residual can be set at. The minimum and maximum amounts depend on the original purchase price of the vehicle - refer to Getting the Most out of Your Novated Lease for the percentages. It makes sense to set your residual at an amount that the vehicle is expected to be worth at the end of the term. If anything, in order to minimise the chances of having to make up a shortfall, set the residual lower than its expected value at the end of the term rather than higher.

Can my family use this vehicle?

Do I have to buy a new vehicle to enter into a Novated Lease arrangement?
It's up to you. Normally people do choose to novate a brand new vehicle, but Fleetcare can organise for second-hand vehicles to be novated as well. You can even convert the vehicle you currently own into a novated lease, as long as it is less than 3 years old now and will be less than 8 years old at the end of the lease (for luxury vehicles, check the age criteria with Fleetcare). Just submit the details on a Request for Salary Package Schedule form to find out how much it would cost, or talk it over with your Fleetcare consultant by calling 1300 655 170 (when you hear the announcement press 1 then 4).

I’m happy with the amounts on my Salary Package Schedule. What happens next?
Once you have signed and returned the Salary Package Schedule to Fleetcare, your Human Resources department will be contacted for their approval to proceed. Once approval has been confirmed, Fleetcare will organise for the finance documents to be drawn up. The finance provider is likely to contact you to obtain information for their credit approval process. Once finance has been approved, you will be asked to review and sign the finance documents and a Fleetcare Vehicle Management Agreement, and forward them to Fleetcare. All forms can be sent to you by mail, fax or e-mail if you send your request to leasing@fleetcare.com.au Your Account Manager will advise you of the estimated delivery date of your vehicle, and as the day approaches, the actual date will be confirmed. Your preferred method of delivery will also be discussed with you – that is, whether you would prefer your vehicle to be delivered to your home or office, or whether you would like to collect it from the relevant dealer or from a Fleetcare office. Then it will be over to you to enjoy the benefits of a professionally managed vehicle, along with the added bonus of reducing the tax that you pay!

If my vehicle is in for repairs, can I get a hire car and who pays for it?
As hire cars are not a legitimate vehicle running cost, they are not included in your Novated Lease package and this expense can not be reimbursed to you. Some insurance companies offer a hire car option as part of their policy; however payment is between you and your insurer and not claimable through Fleetcare. Although we do offer you competitive hire car rates through Budget, simply click on the hire car section under Resources in the portal for a quote.

Why is it that I can benefit from packaging a car?
The main reason is that, if you package a vehicle, you pay for it out of pre-tax dollars. The only offset to this is that it triggers a Fringe Benefits Tax charge, which you need to pay to your employer. However, because vehicles are concessionally taxed for FBT purposes, the FBT amount usually costs less than the savings you achieve from paying for the vehicle out of pre-tax dollars and results in an overall increase in your income. The amount that you pay each month for your vehicle is called a salary sacrifice amount. This is because you sacrifice part of your salary to have the vehicle of your choice instead. You pay by way of your employer withholding the amount you have nominated from your pre-tax salary. Instead of taxing that salary and passing the balance on to you, your employer passes it straight on to Fleetcare to cover the costs of your Novated Lease. You do not have to be paying the highest marginal rate of tax to achieve tax savings with a salary packaged vehicle. Note that you will need to get your own tax advice from an independent advisor to check that this would be a beneficial arrangement for you in your particular circumstances.
